得獎感言
     I am very honoured to be nominated as NDHU’s first honorary alumni. I have had a long relationship with NDHU, beginning in the academic year 2000-2001 when I taught a graduate course as part-time faculty in the Graduate Institute of Ethnic Relations. Ever since I started working at the University of Ottawa in 2001, it was my dream to establish relations between UO and NDHU. From 2004 to 2007, I conducted 18 months of field research in Truku communities in Wanrong and Hsiulin Townships of Hualien County, as well as in a Seediq community in Ren’ai Township, Nantou County. I also did 6 months of field research in Hsiulin Township and Ren’ai in 2012-2013. And, I have made an effort to visit NDHU at least one a year. I have maintained close relations with NDHU faculty, often coming to give invited lectures, attend conferences, and in 2005, as a visiting researcher at the College of Indigenous Studies. I came to appreciate NDHU as an international leader in Indigenous Studies. As a matter of fact, some of my first readings about Indigenous issues in Canada were of articles and books written by NDHU faculty members. The College of Indigenous Studies became my “home-away-from-home,” but more importantly, an incubator of my academic work on Indigenous Studies and Indigenous Rights. Without this intellectual stimulation and nourishment, I would not have become the researcher that I am today.  
     I have long hoped to pass on the lessons from Taiwan to younger generations. Finally, in 2015, 2017, and 2019, I was able to bring a delegation of students from the UO Faculty of Social Sciences to study in a field research course entitled “Indigenous Peoples of Taiwan.” I hope that we can deepen our ties and academic collaboration. As both Taiwan and Canada move toward Peace and Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, Indigenous education is increasingly important for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students alike. I plan to bring students back to NDHU in 2021 and 2023; but also hope that we can take NDHU students to Canada. Moreover, I plan to spend most of my sabbatical in 2021-2022 at NDHU. I am very honoured to be a part of the important project of Indigenous education at NDHU; and thus very happy to be invited to be NDHU’s first honorary alumnus. 

我很榮幸被提名為國立東華大學的第一位榮譽校友。從2000-2001學年開始,我就與東華大學建立了長期的關係,當時我在族群關係研究所教過 「高等人類學理論」。自從我2001年開始在渥太華大學教書以來,我的夢想就是要協助渥太華大學和東華大學建立密切的學術關係。從2004年到2007年,我在花蓮縣萬榮鄉和秀林鄉的太魯閣族部落以及南投縣仁愛鄉的賽德克族部落進行了18個月的田野研究。我還於2012-2013年在秀林鄉和仁愛鄉進行了6個月的田調。而且,我努力每年至少訪問東華大學一次。我與東華大學的教授保持著密切的關係,經常來此進行演講,參加會議,並在2005年以原民院的訪問學者身份進行田野研究。我非常認同東華大學是國際原住民族研究的領導者。事實上,我自己剛開始的時候,讀過東華大學的教授所寫的文章和書籍才了解對加拿大第一民族的歷史與現況。原民院已經成為了我的“第二故鄉”,但更重要的是,這是我有關原住民族研究和原住民族權利的學術研究的搖籃。沒有這種學術的刺激和營養,我就不會成為今天的研究者。
我一直希望將把台灣的研究精神傳給年輕一代。 最終,在2015年,2017年和2019年,我有機會帶領渥太華大學社會科學學院的學生代表團進行“台灣原住民族”的實地研究課程。他們有機會跟東華大學的教授學習,跟東大的學生交流,也可以親自參訪部落。我希望我們能夠加深這種學術合作。 隨著台灣和加拿大都與原住民族發展出和平與和解(peace and reconciliation)的關係,原住民族教育對原住民和非原住民的學生越來越重要。 我計劃在2021年和2023年將學生帶回東華大學; 但也希望我們能邀請東華大學的學生來加拿大研究加拿大第一民族的議題。 此外,我計劃在2021-2022年在東華大學當客座教授。 我很榮幸能夠在東華大學的原住民教育扮演小的角色。我也覺得國際教育的交流很重要。我們都支持歷史與轉型正義。 因此,我很高興被邀請成為東華大學的第一名榮譽校友。
